Kingdom of nomadism, where pottery from North Africa and gold from Sudan passed from hand to hand, land of trade furrowed for centuries by large caravans come to swap desert salt against the millet of the savannah, Mauritania, opened to tourism since 1997 only, is a fascinating country, and still unknown, with innumerable riches to discover.

Mauritania is a twice as big country as France and has only three million inhabitants: it is a desert country, land of men, from Monod to Saint Saint-Exupéry. The modern world sought to increase its hold without really undermining the identity of its people, based on the nomadic ideal: an eternal wandering in the great spaces of sand and wind. A legendary desire to be free has forged this people, who were never touched by foreign domination.

I invite you to discover this Western Sahara where the landscapes are sumptuous but where the human presence is more important than in the central Sahara. You have to go through this country to understand this people and what it means to cling to this beautiful and arid land. We will do this in the form of discovery camel trek that will leave you with memories of the nights under the stars, but also of refreshing sources and green oasis.

  • The canyons of Targit
  • The secret pass of Tezent
  • The great dune of Nouakane
  • The palm groves of Lemeillah
  • Bibouacs under a sky full of stars

D1: Departure from France and arrival at Atar.
Transfer to the hostel in Atar. Before driving, we fork to Souigya, place of our meeting with our camel drivers. Dinner and overnight in bivouac in impressive canyons.

D2: Souigya - Tezent Canyons .
Early wake up for those who want to admire the dawn. Then you attend the most delicate stage of a camel trek: the distribution of the bivouac equipment on the dromedaries. Finally come the first steps in the dunes where the guide will drive you from ridge to ridge to admire the horizon and shades of ocher and sand. After the lunch break and the mint tea, you resume your walk to the place of bivouac between golden sands and shooting stars. Dinner around the fire and night under the tent or under the stars.

D3: Tezent Dunes - Nouakane Canyons.
Early morning awakening in an environment of canyons. After breakfast, you leave the bivouac, and head south through the fault of the sandstone mountains. This part of the trip will take you to the village of Mayaetag and to the small village of Tentemdej, where you will have a tea break with the locals before continuing to the beautiful dunes of Nouakane, place of the bivouac.

D4: Nouakane Dunes - Lemeillah Dunes .
A day like no other. Early in the morning, you leave the pleasant bivouac: immensity, space, sky ... all for an immersion in these Saharan landscapes. Here the silence is breathing, "we sit on a dune and something something radiates in silence". You resume walking in the erg Malichigdane, grandiose panorama of dunes and euphorbia under a "desperately blue" sky. Bivouac in the middle of the dunes.

D5: Lemeillah Dunes - Malichigdane Erg.
A short day where you wave in an ocean of dunes that sometimes opens on horizons of tabular mountains. This is an area very popular with nomadic camel breeders and your day will be punctuated with meetings. Bivouac in the middle of the dunes.

D6: Malichigdane Erg - Lemdeina Mountain.
Go southwest to Lemdeina Mountain, where you can see the Yagref Valley that you will reach for lunch in the shade of the acacias. You will resume your progress to the place of bivouac in the dunes and the last evening with the camel drivers.

D7: Lemdeina Yagref Mountain - Atar (390km).
Early departure to Yagref. Lunch under the acacias and transfer to Atar. Dinner and overnight at the hostel in Atar.

D8: Atar - airport and return to France.
