Description

There is much to discover on the hiking variant of the ancestor of all alpine crossings. Join me on a guided tour and cross the Valais Alps from the old roman city of Sion to Zermatt.

This great tour is an unforgettable experience for all hiking enthusiasts. This variant leads pleasurably over panoramic high altitude paths and does not cross glaciers.

I have designed this Haute Route so that we can walk it in 6 days, with only a few transfers by bus or cable car. We stay overnight in huts and small mountain hotels.

Dates: June - October.

Program

D1: The Walser alps and hamlets of Val d'Herens
We take the local bus that brings us from the main valley of the Valais into the beautiful Val d'Herens / Eringertal. Our starting point is Eison, the very last village reachable by car on the west facing side of the Valley. From here we walk on a balcony trail towards the different typical Walser Alps where the Herens cows grass during the summer and the farmers produce cheese. Tête Blanche mountain at the end of the valley will always be in sight. We finish our first walk with a descent from the beautiful Walser town Villa to a stunning waterfall and into Evolène where we spend the first night.
Distance: 10,5km, altitude differences: +800m, -1074m.

Overnight in a farmstay in Evolène.

D2: La Sage (1667m) - Col du Tsaté (2867m) - Cabane de Moiry (2825m).
From the beautiful village of La Sage our hiking tour starts over alpine meadows and reaches a small mountain lake up to the Col du Tsaté which offers breathtaking views of the great Valais 4000m peaks. Then we descend into Val de Moiry with its turquoise blue lake Lac de Moiry. But before that we enjoy a picnic at the idyllic Lac de la Bayenne. A last worthwhile ascent brings us to the fantastically situated Moiry hut.
Distance: 10km, altitude differences: +1617m, -459m.
Overnight stay and dinner in the Cabane de Moiry (dorms).

D3: Cabane de Moiry (2825m) - Zinal - Weisshorn Hotel - Bella Tola hut (2346m).
Descent back to the Moiry dam. Afterwards post bus ride to Zinal.
You will then enjoy probably one of the most beautiful panoramic paths above Zinal and a spectacular crossing into the German-speaking Turtmann Valley. Before we reach the panorama trail, a steep ascent has to be mastered. Once at the top, the path winds its way along the mountain. Now it goes up over alpine meadows to the historic Weisshorn Hotel where we can't miss a piece of cake. After another hour we reach our destination of today, the Bella Tola Hut.
Distance: 12km, altitude differences: +892m, -450m.
Overnight stay and dinner in the Bella Tola hut (dorms).

D4: Bella Tola hut (2346m) - Meidpass (2790m) - pits (1822m).
Today we hike over beautiful alpine meadows and mountain lakes to the Meidpass. The pass marks the "Röstigraben" and we reach the Grüezi Land. Picnic at the beautiful Meidsee and then a descent through a larch forest into the idyllic, quiet Turtmanntal.
Distance: 10km, altitude differences: + 444m, -968m.
Overnight stay at the Hotel Schwarzhorn, Turtmanntal.

D5: Gruben (1825m) - Augstbordpass (2893m) - Boys (1955m) / St.Niklaus.
Over the Augstbordpass we reach today the Mattertal and the Jungu small village. Today we reach the highest pass of our tour. The descent leads into the wild Augsbordtal. If the weather is fine, there are impressive views of the Mischabel and Monte Rosa groups. In the small hamlet of Jungen we have a snack in the beautiful Bergbeizli before we take the small cable car down to St.Niklaus.
Distance:12km, altitude differences: +1000m, -930m.
Overnight stay in a hikers hotel in Herbriggen.

D6: Täschalp (2214m) - Zermatt (1606m).
There is no better way to approach Zermatt: Today, the Walliser Alps with the most famous and also most beautiful mountains around Zermatt, Matterhorn, Breithorn and Weisshorn, present themselves to us from their "chocolate sides". At the view point Sunnegga, we are right in front of the Matterhorn. Passing the beautiful Leisee, we go down to Findlen and finally to Zermatt.
Distance: 12,9km, altitude differences: +278m, - 858m.
Overnight stay in a hotel in Zermatt or individual continuation of your journey by train.
