Vertical caving in Ordons chasm (Doubs)

Description

Let's go together near Montrond-le-Château in the Loue valley, between Besançon and Pontalier, to explore the Ordons chasm. This cave, rich in concretions, is perfect for an introduction to vertical caving.

After a few minutes' walk, the chasm opens up in the middle of the forest, beginning with a 6-meter-high shaft, followed by a second vertiginous 18-meter shaft to enter the main and large room! We then walk through wide galleries decorated with concretions, stalactites, stalagmites and other magnificent draperies. The route is around 500 meters long, alternating wide halls and narrower passages. There's plenty to keep your eyes peeled the whole way out!

The configuration of the Ordons chasm makes it suitable for intermediate cavers. Specific equipment is essential: abseiling and rope-climbing gear.

Due to its popularity, the chasm has suffered some damage over the years, notably a loss of brilliance in the concretions due to repeated passage by explorers. Cleaning and preservation initiatives have been undertaken by the GCPM (le club de spéléologie du plateau de Montrond) to maintain its aesthetic character. To this end, tape has been installed to "channel" the movements of cavers.

Equipment to bring:

• Closed-toe, notched, flexible shoes (high-toe if possible).
• Soft sports trousers or running-type tights.
• A light micro-fleece jumper.
• Something to tie back long hair.
• A change of clothes and shoes in the car.

Program

• Meet in front of the GCPM lodge in Montrond-le-Château, about 30 minutes' drive south of Besançon.
• Suit up and get dressed with the appropriate equipment.
• Short approach walk to the entrance to the chasm.
• Exploration of the Ordons chasm.
• Return walk to the parking lot.
• In all, approximately 3 hours of activity.

The price includes

• Supervision by the caving instructor.
• Caving wetsuit (please state your height and weight when registering).
• Helmet and LED lighting.
• Harness with lanyards, belay device and all necessary equipment.
• Collective equipment (ropes, karabiners, anchors, backpacks, cans, first-aid kit, etc.).

The price does not include

• Return transport to the village of Montrond-le-Chateau.
• Snacks.
