Introduction to multi-pitch climbing (Vosges)

Description

I offer a day of climbing specifically designed for indoor climbers or climbers who have experience on single-pitch routes and would like to learn the basics so they can tackle multi-pitch routes independently. This may also be of interest to you if you already climb multi-pitch routes and are looking to improve your efficiency, or even if you are simply looking for a guide to climb a multi-pitch route.

This multi-pitch climb will also and above all be an opportunity to climb in a splendid setting: either at the Hans rock above Lac Blanc, or on the Martinswand rock in the immediate vicinity of Hohneck, the highest peak in the Vosges department.

Overlooking the magnificent Lac Blanc, the Rocher Hans offers breathtaking views. Here, at an altitude of over 1000 meters, several multi-pitch routes of around 100 meters have been marked out. While many require a high level of climbing skill (6+), some routes are easier and are perfect for discovering multi-pitch climbing and its specific features. The rock is excellent granite and the routes offer a variety of profiles: slabs, cracks, dihedrals, etc.

The Martinswand site is divided into several sectors: Petit Cervin, Strassburgerwand, Petites voies, Voies de sortie, and Martinswand. You will find dozens of routes of a very reasonable level, sometimes on steep granite, sometimes on more sloping slabs, and sometimes featuring dihedrals. The atmosphere here is also very mountainous, as you are climbing just below the Hohneck and its 1363 meters of altitude.

If you fancy more vertical adventures in the region, you can also join me for a climb on the Spitzkoepfe ridge in the Hohneck massif or, in winter mode, for an introduction to ice climbing in the Vosges mountains.

Program

• Meet at around 9am at one of the superb sites at Lac Blanc or Martinswand, between Gérardmer and Colmar.
• Assessment of each person's technical level and presentation of the equipment.
• Setting up a belay with the rope.
• Strategy for organizing the sequence of pitches.
• Climbing a multi-pitch route.
