Infos & BookingDescription
I propose you to join me in the heart of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in order to climb a vertiginous route and admire the magnificent cirque of Gavarnie all along this via ferrata of the Chaos of Coumély.
After meeting up on the road between Luz-Saint-Sauveur and Gavarnie, we set off on the approach walk that leads to the start of the via ferrata. The via starts gently and winds along a series of small walls until it reaches the foot of the cliff, which we then climb. The route then becomes vertical for several dozen meters and the atmosphere becomes increasingly vertiginous. After crossing a short overhang, which can be avoided by taking the less steep ledges on the left, you continue to a ramp (equipped with fixed foot pedals and long handrails) that you must climb astride before arriving at a terrace that is perfect for a well-deserved break. We recommend taking the time to enjoy the landscape and the incredible view of the Gavarnie cirque and the high peaks of the Pyrenees, such as the Tour du Marboré and the Taillon. Another steep section leads to a 40-meter-long footbridge that will give you a thrill as it moves and the void is very present under your feet (you walk on openwork grates that reinforce this vertiginous feeling). After this traverse, a vertical descent and an easy ledge, we are on our way back, equipped with cables that take us back to the parking lot.
The total positive difference in altitude is 180 meters, making this a vertical via ferrata on a grand scale where thrills are guaranteed!
The via ferrata is accessible to children over 1.40 m tall.
The normal price is 45€ per person. Groups of 6 or more people are charged 40€ per person.
If you fancy another vertical route in the region, you can follow me on the nearby Pont Napoléon via ferrata in Luz-Saint-Sauveur.
