Sport caving in Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges

Description

Do you dream of exploring a cave with rope sections and a variety of environments? This outing is for you! You don't need to be an accomplished athlete: all you need is a little motivation, a minimum level of physical fitness, and the ability to navigate a few narrow passages. Equipped with harnesses, ropes, and the appropriate gear, we will set off on an adventure like true explorers of the underground world.

This caving trip will be rich and varied: low passages, ledges, small climbs, vertiginous shafts, and an underground river! You will learn the basics of rope progression techniques and horizontal movement used in caving. We won't be descending/ascending on ropes, but will cross vertiginous handrails!

It will also be a time for discussion and observation, to take the time to understand this fascinating environment. Stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, winding galleries, and mysterious chambers will reveal themselves to us as we progress.

The outing will last a good half-day, including preparations and time spent underground. To extend the adventure, I will share with you some ideas for walks in the surrounding area: an opportunity to discover secret and unspoiled corners of this magnificent part of the Pyrenees.

Program

• Meet near the village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, home of the famous cathedral. The GPS point will be sent to you before the outing.
• The meeting time is defined together when you book. Generally around 9am for the morning and 1pm for the afternoon. This is flexible, depending on our availability and your needs.
• Transfer to the cave parking lot. We will gear up here.
• Short 10-minute approach walk to the discreet entrance in the forest.
• A quick briefing before heading inside, we switch on the lights and off we go.
• About 3 hours of progress, observation and exchanges underground.
• Back to the car and information about the nearby places to visit.

Personal equipment to bring:

• Comfortable clothing for a temperature of 10°C.
• Closed-toe sports shoes or boots.
• Headband or elastic band for long hair.
• A change of clothes after the activity.
• A snack and a small bottle of water.

The price includes

• Supervision by the caving instructor.
• Technical equipment: helmet with lighting, caving wetsuit.
• Professional insurance.

The price does not include

• Return transport to the village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, about 30 minutes' drive from Saint-Gaudens, 1 hour from Saint-Lary-Soulan and 35 minutes from Bagnères-de-Luchon.
