Crêtes de Combe la Roche via ferrata (Arvieux)

Description

I invite you to join me on a thrilling vertical adventure on the Crêtes de Combe la Roche via ferrata, located above the village of Arvieux and at the foot of the famous Col de l'Izoard, in the heart of the Queyras massif.

This challenging and vertiginous route promises a wonderful experience and magnificent views of the Arvieux valley and the mountains that surround it. It climbs a 300-meter cliff and is shaded in the afternoon, making it accessible even on hot summer days. Some athletic and very vertiginous passages are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories!

After the equipment has been distributed, a 20-minute walk will take us to the start of the via ferrata, where I will give you a briefing on safety and how to use the equipment. Then it will be time to climb the Crêtes de Combe la Roche via ferrata. This begins with a first vertical wall about 50 meters high, with a few slightly athletic and vertiginous passages that allow you to warm up properly. The rest is easier, along a ridge that you have to climb by walking and scrambling, then following a ramp crossing to the left to a small shoulder located under the final wall. This section requires you to use natural holds in the rock to climb, which makes the route more fun and interesting. The atmosphere here is impressive and vertical as we are located in the middle of the cliff.

From there, the difficulty increases: you continue climbing diagonally to the left to reach a wide dihedral with a section of about ten meters that is very physical and very vertical, even slightly overhanging. This is followed by other short athletic passages before finding either the escape route on the right (this is the old route) or the new final section opened in 2021 with a traverse on a mini rope bridge over the void and slightly overhanging, then the final rope bridge. This new exit is very impressive, crossing overhangs perched 300 meters above the ground.

At the summit, it's time to enjoy a break and the view of the Hautes-Alpes and Queyras mountains before descending leisurely along a trail and returning to the parking lot.

Program

• Meet at the bus station in Guillestre or directly in the village of Arvieux, a 25-minute drive from Guillestre.
• Transfer to the via ferrata parking lot if meeting in Guillestre.
• Approximately 20-minute walk to reach the start of the via.
• From 2 to 3 hours to climb the via ferrata.
• 30-minute walk back to the parking lot.
