Pra-Premier via ferrata (Arvieux, Queyras)

Description

I invite you to join me on a wonderful vertical adventure on the Pra-Premier via ferrata, located above the village of Arvieux and at the foot of the famous Col de l'Izoard, in the heart of the Queyras massif.

This via ferrata offers two routes with very different levels of difficulty: one is easier, very suitable for beginners, children, people who want to discover vertical climbing without getting scared, and outings with family or friends, and the other is more challenging. However, the two routes have sections in common and are quite close to each other. As you climb, the view of the Hautes-Alpes and Queyras mountains opens up, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent scenery.

After the equipment has been distributed, a short 10-minute walk takes you to the start of the via ferrata, where I will give you a briefing on safety and how to use the equipment. Then it's time to climb the Pra-Premier via ferrata. Right from the start, you have to choose between the two routes. The easier route starts gently along the cliff and then climbs a vertical limestone wall to a metal ladder that allows you to easily overcome an overhang. The more challenging route starts with a compact wall with a vertical passage that leads to a grassy ledge at the foot of the steepest part of the cliff. The route then continues slightly uphill to the left and crosses over several overhangs via several very vertiginous passages before rejoining the easy route above the ladder. The shared section consists of a long ascending traverse, still to the left, to the center of the cliff, then crosses a well-equipped vertical wall to reach a new grassy ledge. At this point, there is an escape route to the right. Otherwise, the via ferrata continues and a final very vertiginous traverse passage above an overhang gives access to a less steep spur leading to the summit.

It is then time to enjoy a break and the landscape of the Queyras mountains before descending gently along a trail and returning to the parking lot.

Program

• Meet at the bus station in Guillestre or directly in the village of Arvieux, a 25-minute drive from Guillestre.
• Transfer to the via ferrata parking lot if meeting in Guillestre.
• Approximately 10-minute walk to reach the start of the via.
• Approximately 2 hours to climb the via ferrata.
• 30-minute walk back to the parking lot.

• Return transport to Guillestre or Arvieux.
