Literature hiking stay in Provence

Description

During this stay in the South of France, I invite you to discover the literary Provence. The one where many writers have lived, stayed and left their mark, in order to give free rein to our literature hikes.

Jean Giono, Marcel Pagnol, Albert Camus, Henri Bosco, Alphonse Daudet, Frédéric Mistral, Jean-Claude Izzo, Alexandre Dumas... many are those who have written down their  adventures in Provence in black and white.

I will try to pass on to you this great human experience. The hikes, in carefully chosen sites, will be punctuated by reading breaks. The text and its surroundings will enhance each other and give the hike a special poetic dimension. This way of getting in touch with the work of an author allows you to discover Provence in a singular way, far from the beaten track.

From the Lubéron to the Alpilles, via the famous and spectacular Calanques of Marseille, come and walk in the footsteps of the writers.

Program

D1: Pierre Magnan, Manosque and the Rochers de Mourre.
Meet in the early afternoon in front of the TGV station in Avignon and transfer by minibus to the northern Luberon.
We hike not far from Manosque, in the middle of the protruding and strange rocks of the Mourres, which offer a surrealist landscape.
Walking time: 1h30.
Altitude difference: 225m.
Accommodation and meals in Banon.

D2: Jean Giono, the Montagne de Lure.
It is on the mountain of Lure, perched at an altitude of nearly 1900 metres, that Giono set a large part of his novels. Today, we are leaving to discover the wild landscapes that served as a backdrop to his works.
Walking time: 5 hours.
Altitude difference: 500m.
Accommodation and meals in Banon.

D3: Albert Camus, Luberon, Lourmarin and the Oppedette gorges.
Today we walk in the region that Albert Camus loved so much. We visit the gorges of Oppedette, a canyon that is a real sword in the limestone plateau of the Luberon.
Walking time: 3 hours.
Altitude difference: 350m.
Accommodation and meals in Buoux.

D4: Marcel Pagnol, the Garlaban and the Buzine Castle.
Head south to Aubagne for a hike in Pagnol's country.
Manon's cave, the Garlaban, the Pic de Taoumé and the Grosibou cave are part of his universe, as well as the Buzine castle, setting of "Chateau de ma mère".
Walking time: 4 to 5 hours.
Altitude difference: 500m.
Accommodation and meals in Marseille (dinner on your own).

D5: Alexandre Dumas, the Frioul Islands and the Château d'If.
We take the boat at the old port to visit the Château d'If, made famous in "The Count of Monte Cristo", then hike on the mineral islands of Frioul.
Walking time: 3 to 4 hours.
Altitude difference: 150m.
Accommodation and meals in Marseille (dinner on your own).

D6: Jean-Claude Izzo, city-rando in Marseille.
For this last day, this city-rando leads us in the footsteps of Jean-Claude Izzo, in the heart of this multicultural and deeply engaging city that is Marseille.
Walking time: 1h30.
Altitude difference: 50m.

This programme may be modified at any time depending on the weather conditions, the physical and technical abilities of the participants and the availability of accommodation. In the last resort, I am the only judge of the programme.

The price includes

• Supervision by the mountain leader.
• Transfers on site.
• Accommodation in a B&B, lodge or hotel, based on a twin room.
• Picnics.
• Dinners from D1 to D3.
• Luggage transfer.

The price does not include

• Transport to and from the meeting point.
• D4 and D5 dinners.
• Boat trip and visit to the castle on day 5 (approx. 22 €).
• Personal expenses.
• Anything not mentioned in "The price includes".

Accommodation

• Standard category, simple and clean hotels or B&Bs are chosen for their privileged location.
• You will be accommodated in a double room with private bathroom.
