Hiking in the Mafate cirque

Join me for a hike that will take you to the heart of the isolated Mafate cirque, accessible only on foot, for a complete immersion in pristine and authentic nature.

Between breathtaking natural ramparts, lush forests, and landscapes sculpted by time, Mafate offers a spectacular and extraordinary environment. The cirque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a true natural sanctuary where fauna, flora, and local traditions blend harmoniously.

As a specialist in this destination, I will share my passion for this unique cirque with you, exploring its history, geological formation, and the richness of its flora and fauna, all punctuated with a few anecdotes.

Program

Day 1: Col des Bœufs and Plaine des Tamarins.
We begin our adventure at Col des Bœufs, the iconic gateway to the Cirque de Mafate.
We will start our hike with a descent towards the enchanting plateau of Plaine des Tamarins, famous for its endemic trees with their twisted shapes.
In this unique environment, several options will be available depending on your pace and preferences: exploring natural pools, discovering waterfalls, or taking breaks at breathtaking panoramic viewpoints.
The day will continue to an hamlet (a small, isolated village) where we will be warmly welcomed by the inhabitants of Mafate. This will be an opportunity to share a delicious Creole meal and enjoy a moment of simple relaxation in the heart of a timeless environment.

Day 2: Hike back to Col des Bœufs.
After a peaceful night, we will recharge with a hearty breakfast at the lodge before continuing our adventure. For this second day, we will begin our ascent towards the Col des Bœufs parking area. To vary the scenery and prolong the enjoyment of the hike, we will take a few variations of the trail, offering new perspectives on the cirque and its spectacular landscape. Between gradual climbs, shaded sections, and breathtaking panoramas, this final stage will beautifully conclude our immersion in the heart of Mafate, leaving us with unforgettable memories and a wonderful sense of escape.

• Round-trip transportation to the Col des Boeufs pass, approximately a 2-hour drive from Saint-Denis.

Accommodation

• I would recommend staying in a guesthouse to ensure an authentic experience and a delicious Creole curry.
• The price per person for the night plus half-board (dinner and breakfast) is approximately 60€.
