Ascent of Piton d'Anchaing (Cirque de Salazie)

Description

I invite you to discover with me the Piton d'Anchaing, this legendary peak in the Cirque de Salazie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most striking symbols of Réunion Island's painful history of slavery.

Indeed, this mountain is linked to the story of two slaves: Anchaing, a runaway slave from the island, and his partner Héva. In love, they decided to flee their masters and take refuge on the summit of this mountain, considered inaccessible, to live there. This spectacular peak now bears the name of this slave.

An educational trail about "maroonage" will lead us to the foot of the Piton d'Anchaing, passing near an ancient magma chamber of the Piton des Neiges. From there, we will begin this challenging climb while enjoying beautiful views of Réunion's highest peak. Once we reach the summit, we will walk around this viewpoint to contemplate the exceptional beauty of the entire Cirque de Salazie.

Program

• Meet around 8am in the village of Hell-Bourg, in the heart of the Cirque de Salazie.
• Hike to the summit plateau of Piton d'Anchaing, which we will circle to enjoy superb panoramic views of the entire Cirque de Salazie.
• Distance: 6.5 kilometers, elevation gain and loss: 750 meters.
