Description
I propose a unique ascent of Piton des Neiges from the charming village of Hell-Bourg in the Cirque de Salazie.
This challenging 3-day hike takes you along the wild Cap Anglais trail to the summit of Piton des Neiges, reaching an altitude of 3,070 meters. The return journey crosses the Bélouve primary forest, where you will discover its exceptional biodiversity. Finally, you will be treated to a breathtaking view from the Trou de Fer viewpoint, on the highest waterfall in France.
To continue exploring the vibrant island in a different way, I also suggest other routes:
- a hike to climb Piton d'Anchaing,
- a trek in the Mafate cirque,
- and a hiking route through the three cirques of Réunion.
Program
Day 1: Hell-Bourg - Dufour Cave hut.
Departure from the charming village of Hell-Bourg for a hiking circuit to explore the Cirque de Salazie.
Overnight at the Dufour Cave hut.
Distance: 7.5 km, elevation gain: 1,500 meters.
Day 2: Piton des Neiges summit - Bélouve lodge.
Very early departure to reach the 3,070-meter summit of Piton des Neiges at sunrise. The view from the highest point overlooking the Indian Ocean is incredible and always an unforgettable moment.
Descent followed by a trek through the Bébour forest to reach the Bélouve lodge where we spend the night.
Distance: 14.5 km, elevation gain: 600 meters, elevation loss: 1,600 meters.
Day 3: Bélouve - Trou de Fer - Hell-Bourg.
We begin the day by hiking to the viewpoint overlooking the impressive Trou de Fer (Iron Hole) and its immense vertical waterfalls, the highest in France. The route then leads us back to Hell-Bourg via beautiful trails.
Distance: 12.5 km, elevation gain: 250 meters, elevation loss: 750 meters.
