Description
I propose you to climb together the Sajama stratovolcano, which at 6542 meters is the highest point in Bolivia and the third highest (in this case, extinct) volcano in the world.
It rises alone, covered by its 25,000-year-old ice cap, in the middle of the national park of the same name, a vast plateau populated by vicuñas and dotted with thermal waters and geysers. On the flanks of the colossus are pumice stones, volcanic bombs, "yareta" pads and the world's highest forest.
If you would like to climb other beautiful peaks in the Bolivian Andes, I suggest:
- 6 days to climb Chachacomani and Chearoco in the Cordillera Real,
- the ascent of Huayna Potosi above La Paz,
- the ascent of Nevado Illimani in the Cordillera Real,
- two days of mountaineering in the Cordillera Oriental
- and the ascent of Ancohuma to an altitude of 6427 meters.
And also some trad climbing in the Quimsa Cruz Cordillera.
Program
D1: Transfer to base camp.
Transfer by vehicle and ascent to base camp (4700m), located on the last stretch of green before the mineral flanks of the mountain.
D2: Climb to high camp (5600m).
The climb to the high camp is tough. The site is generally battered by bitterly cold winds, but sometimes conditions are favorable (when it's the others who are going).
D3: Ascent of Sajama volcano.
After setting off in the middle of the night, we have to climb a 45-degree couloir in snow and ice, followed by an exposed but easy mixed ridge. These various passages give access to the spectacular summit dome, often covered with penitents as fascinating as they are tedious to cross.
D4: Extra day.
A day of rest, reserve in case of unforeseen circumstances or sunbathing.
D5: Descent.
Descent to the village of Sajama and a well-deserved dip in the thermal waters.
D6: Return to La Paz.
The price includes
- Supervision by the English-speaking mountain guide (1 guide / 2 persons).
- Private transport La Paz - Sajama (return trip).
- The cook and complete food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), with drinking water at will.
- Tents and foam mattresses.
- Carriers and mules for carrying the bags.
- Collective equipment: rope, ice screws, crevasse rescue kit.
