Go for this course which will bring you the basics of ski touring and off-piste skiing, and leave for 3 days of skiing in some of the most famous resorts of the upper Aosta Valley in Italy, near Mont Blanc.

The objective is to allow skiers of a red-slope level to improve their technique by becoming more familiar with ski touring on ascent and descent, and to learn the basics of avalanche danger to better manage the risk when carrying out the chosen outings.


D1: Meet at 8.30am at the scheduled location. Day dedicated to the learning and development of off-piste skiing techniques, and to the use of avalanche rescue equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe and possibly other equipment) in Courmayeur resort. At the end of the afternoon, analysis of the basic elements of the weather and avalanche bulletins for tomorrow's choices.

Duration: 5 to 6 hours of skiing.

D2: Meet at 9am at the refuge. Today you will make one of the classic off-piste ski routes of Courmayeur ski resort, then, again, ypou will analyze the newsletters to decide the next day's itinerary. These runs, in addition to applying what was learned the day before, will aim to take stock of the analysis of newsletters. In particular, it will be necessary to follow carefully my directives and to try to orient oneself (to understand the cardinal points, to take markers, schedules, etc). ½ board in refuge.
Duration: 5 to 6 hours of skiing.

D3: meet at 8.30am at the Courmayeur-Val Veni cable car, transfer to La Thuile-Petit Saint Bernard by car (25-30 min from Courmayeur). The day will be devoted to ski tour an easy route during which you will learn the basic climbing techniques and you will deepen, in the field the basic elements of the newsletters, the directives given by the guide and the orientation. Around 4pm, at the end of the day, we will make an assessment of the internship.
Duration: 5 h to 6 h, D +/-: 600m.

Educational content of the internship:

  • Introduction to avalanche rescue with the use of transceiver, shovel and probe and the presentation of additional material
  • What to say during a rescue call and organization of the helicopter arrival
  • Choice of basic equipment for ski touring (ski, shoes, poles, skins, transceiver, shovel, probe, backpack, etc.)
  • First aid concepts
  • Orientation notions
  • Learning the basics of off-piste skiing and ski touring
  • Acquisition of a minimum of notions to help avalanche rescue
  • Mastering the basics of weather and avalanche bulletins in preparation for a ski day
  • Field orientation
