Hiking on the Coscione plateau (Southern Corsica)

Description

Among pozzines, torrents, moors and pastures, I propose to guide you during this magnificent hike taking place in a labyrinth of fantastic landscapes roamed by herds of free horses, as well as cows and pigs.

Less than one hour drive from the Mediterranean seaside, you will discover on the Coscione plateau another aspect of Corsica, while contemplating the southern shores of the island from these magnificent mountains. Indeed, here the green, flat landscapes here are in stark contrast to those usually found on the Beauty Island. Located at an altitude of 1500 meters in the Alta Rocca highlands, this mountain environment is conducive to the development of a remarkable flora, with the presence of numerous species of mountain flowers. It is also one of the few places where you can observe pozzines, flat peat bogs dotted with streams and a legacy of Corsica's ice age. For sure you will be amazed by this different and specific setting, that you will love for sure.

Off the beaten track, I will show you the hidden wonders of this exceptional place and you will enjoy an unforgettable day!

Required equipment:

• Shoes suitable for mountain walking.
• A backpack.
• A water bottle or flask (1 liter per person, you can refill your water bottle with spring water for the return trip).
• Energy foods (cereal bars, dried fruit, etc.).
• Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
• A waterproof windbreaker or rain poncho.
• Warm clothing such as a sweater or fleece.

Contact me if you are missing any equipment. Hiking poles, windbreakers, and baby carriers are available to borrow.

Make sure you have a full tank of gas (there are no gas stations in the mountains) and cash (there are no ATMs).

Note: I may decide to change the program or cancel the hike if weather is unfavorable.

 

It is also possible to discover the plateau of Coscione in winter with an amazing snowshoeing trek.

Program

• Meeting at 9am in the village of Quenza (in front of the castle) below Bavella pass.
• Transfer by 4WD vehicle to the start of the hike.
• Departure of the hike towards the plateau of Coscione at 9.30 am.
• About 3 hours and a half  of walking with a positive altitude difference of 150 meters.
• Picnic taken on the spot.
• Return to the village and the parking lot around 3pm.
• Number of participants limited to 7 in the vehicle.
• If you have an adapted vehicle, you can follow me during the transfer to the start of the hike. The cost is 35€ per person and 20€ per child.

The price includes

• Supervision by the mountain leader.
• The transfer by 4WD vehicle from the village of Quenza to reach the start of the hike.
• Coffee and organic canistrelli (Corsican cookies) during the morning break (fruit compote and orange juice for children).

The price does not include

• Return transport to the village of Quenza, around one hour drive from Sartène, Porto-Vecchio or Solenzara.
• Optional Corsican picnic: 10€ per person (bread, Corsican charcuterie, ewe's milk cheese with organic fig jam, canistrelli, coffee, chilled rosé wine, etc.).
  All the ingredients for the Corsican picnic are locally produced, and I take pride in offering you top-quality local products, kept in coolers until you are ready to enjoy them.
