Family hiking on Maïdo: Piton des Orangers

Description

Every Wednesday from July to November, I will accompany you on a journey to discover an extraordinary high-altitude tropical ecosystem. Located on the heights of Saint-Paul, this accessible, family-friendly hike along the ramparts offers breathtaking views of the Mafate cirque, between lookout points and the Tamarins forest.

The itinerary starts from the Messe picnic area, located a few kilometers below the summit of Maïdo. Passing by the Maïdo cave, we will take the path leading to Ti Col. This will be an opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary view of the entire Mafate cirque and discover the history and life of this incredible cirque, accessible only on foot! We will then follow a pleasant trail along the rampart in the heart of a forest of tall tamarind trees to the Piton des Orangers. We will enjoy more views of Mafate from the top of this 1000-meter cliff overlooking the cirque's relief.
The route will finally take us downhill on the pleasant and easy Tête Dure trail, then on the wide and flat 1800 trail, which will bring us back to our starting point.

This hike to Piton des Orangers takes about 4 hours for a distance of 5.5 kilometers and a positive and negative altitude difference of 250 meters.

If you want to continue exploring Reunion Island on beautiful day hikes, you can follow me to Trou de Fer, along the trails of the Mafate cirque to the islets of Cayenne or La Nouvelle, along the paths of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (also possible off-trail or to discover the incredible Plaine des Sables) and to the Chapel in Cilaos.

Program

• Departure every Wednesday from July to November.
• Meet at 7.30am at the parking lot of the Messe rest area in Saint-Paul, located 3 km before the Maïdo parking lot.
• Loop hike to Piton des Orangers.
• The route is well suited for children. Recommended minimum age: 8 years old. For children under 8 years old, please contact me for more information.

• Supervision by the mountain leader.

• Return transport to the picnic area at La Messe (Saint-Paul).
