Hiking in Mafate: La Nouvelle hamlet

Description

Every Monday from July to November, I offer a hike in the upper Mafate region, walking along the trails of this hiker's paradise. The hike starts from the Cirque de Salazie via the Col des Bœufs pass to reach the hamlet of La Nouvelle. Along the way, you will discover wonderful panoramic views of Mafate and the life of the hamlets in the cirque.

From the Col des Bœufs parking lot, we will begin our hike through the forest to reach the Col de Fourche, where we will discover the breathtaking panorama of upper Mafate.

We will then descend to the Plaine des Tamarins, a haven of freshness offering green lawns planted with this tree, emblematic of the highlands of Réunion. We will continue our descent to the hamlet of La Nouvelle, the most populated of the "îlet" in Mafate.
After visiting the village and enjoying the superb view of lower Mafate, we will stop for a picnic in the hamlet.
Then we will climb back up to the Plaine des Tamarins and head to Salazie via the Col des Bœufs to return to the parking lot.

This route in the Cirque de Mafate takes about 6 hours to complete, covering a distance of 13 kilometers with a positive and negative altitude difference of 800 meters.

If you want to continue exploring Reunion Island on beautiful day hikes, you can follow me into the Bélouve forest, on the trails of the Cirque de Mafate towards the Cayenne islet, off-trail on the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (also possible on trail or to discover the incredible Plaine des Sables), towards the Chapel in the Cirque de Cilaos, and to climb the Piton des Orangers.

Program

• Departure every Monday from July to November.
• Meet at 7.30am at the Bœufs parking lot close in Salazie.
• Loop hike in Mafate to La Nouvelle îlet.
• The relatively important altitude difference may present difficulties for children. Recommended minimum age: 12 years old. For children under 12 years old, please contact me for more information.

The price includes

• Supervision by the mountain leader.
• A snack with local drink.

The price does not include

• Return transport to the Bœufs parking lot in the Cirque of Salazie.
• Picnic lunch.
• Drinks.
