Description
I suggest you follow me to climb one of the most mythical, aesthetic and coveted peaks of the Cordillera Real: Illampu, located at 6,368 meters above sea level.
This technical ascent is reserved for experienced, acclimatized and motivated climbers (rating from Fairly Difficult to Difficult depending on conditions). Moreover, the journey to the summit begins from the green Sorata valley which further adds to the charm of the adventure.
If you want to mountaineer on other beautiful peaks in the Bolivian Andes, I also offer:
- the ascent of Chachacomani and Chearoco,
- to climb the French route to Huayna Potosi (or the normal route),
- the ascent of Illimani in the Cordillera Real,
- the Wila Lluxita and the Janq'Uyu - Jisk'a Pata crossing,
- 6 days to climb the Sajama volcano
- and Ancohuma at 6,427 meters above sea level.
Program
Day 1: Transfer and hike to base camp.
Vehicle journey to Sorata and Lak'atiya (4,000 meters above sea level).
The approach walk crosses the Wila Qhuta pass (4,890m) then descends towards the base camp of "Aguas Calientes" (4,600m). Contrary to what the name would suggest, the spring water found here is cold.
Around 4 hours of walking, 900 meters of elevation gain.
Day 2: Hike to the high camp.
Climb through vast moraines and snowfields towards the high camp that we establish on the glacier at around 5,600 meters.
Around 1,000 meters of elevation gain.
Day 3: Ascent of Illampu.
Very early departure towards the summit. The route ends up going up the glacial valley to the bergschrund.
We then have to climb the ice slope (350 meters high, slope up to 55-60 degrees), impressive but quite obvious, to reach the summit ridge.
This, often corniced, can present technical passages before leading to the summit located at 6,368 meters above sea level.
From there, the views are breathtaking over the summit of neighboring Ancohuma and the high Bolivian mountains.
Descent via the same route and return to base camp.
Approximately 800 meters of positive altitude difference.
Day 4:Return to La Paz.
Walk back to the parking lot then transfer to Sorata then La Paz.
